Wedding Wines at Molloys

Introduction

Buying your wines separate to your wedding venue package can prove attractive for many couples.  Saving money is one aspect. Another is that for the same money, you can often drink much better wines than the house wines offered.

It takes a little bit of forward planning, but can often be worth it.  The decision will depend largely on the corkage rate, so do a quick calculation at the outset to see if it is worth it.

Molloys’ selection of well-priced wedding wines has very broad appeal. These wines are sourced directly from the vineyard, passing on the saving to you.  While the low prices may surprise you, take comfort in the fact that many of these wines have been highly praised in the press.

Wedding Wines FAQ

Corkage.  Check the policy at your wedding venue & negotiate the corkage rate at the outset.

Quantities: Allow ½ bottle per person.

Red:White proportions: the current norm is for 50:50.  If your wedding is during the summer, you may wish to veer slightly more towards white – 60:40 would be good.

Sparkling wine quantities: Champagne flutes will give 8-9 glasses per bottle.  Allow 1.5 glasses for a sparkling reception (it doesn’t really matter if you run out, as your guests will gravitate to the bar); 1 glass per head for a sparkling toast.

Samples – taste the wines beforehand for reassurance.  Wine is highly subjective, so don’t pander to everyone’s tastes.  Stick to 2 basic principles:  ‘Budget’ and ‘Broad appeal.’

Special wines: Can I have different wines at the wedding table?  Yes, but ask the servers to be discreet about it!

Tips

Allow time to organise the wines.  Large orders may take a few days to assemble (we want to make sure there are no mistakes on your big day!).

Remember the “B’s: Budget & Broad Appeal: Choose a sensibly-priced wine with broad appeal, rather than a wine which might challenge palates. Soft fruity reds, and fruity whites with medium acidity work best for a mixed audience.

Try the wines with the food.  For tips, see our food & wine matching guide.

Less recognised wines show that you have put some thought into your selection, and people tend to like the concept of drinking French wine, particularly when someone else has gone to the bother of choosing it!  Recognised branded wines can often tempt your guests to calculate how much you have spent!

Appoint a trusted friend to monitor quantities used on the day, and organise for returns to be collected.
